Ace Post - as mentioned in previous comments and elsewhere, the view of libraries given seems to be full of misconceptions and dependant on the view point, either quaint or patronising. The move away from top down management within libraries is key, not removing (another) layer of operational staff. Upon moving our library into the local library was suprised about how much 'away' from the traditonal library services went on. I will steal the point Bethan used in her blog comments http://bethaninfoprof.wordpress.com/2010/06/08/could-we-all-be-replaced-by-volunteers/ and say that the report fails to acknowledge the public libraries 'iceberg like qualities'

A lot of good points made here - well done. Now it's up to those of us working in libraries to tackle some of those misconceptions, quickly.
Incidentally my assistant librarian volunteered in her local library while living in America some years back. She wasn't allowed to shelve books or work on the issue/returns counter. She was given work such as checking CD and video tapes weren't damaged when they were returned.
